Workroom Reorg

by Renee Allen

Welcome to my workroom!

About a year ago, I redid this room in our home as an area to call my own to create beautiful things.  It's been about a decade since I worked in the interior design world, so it was a blast designing my little area.  A comfortable and stylish work environment is really important for me, so the space had to be functional, but also beautiful.

Now that I've been in my workroom for a little under a year, I feel a reorg of space is needed.  Not anything huge, but some tweaks here and there would make some big time savers for me.  Here are some pics of my space:  The Good, The Bad and The Messy.  :D

The gorgeous paint color is Benjamin Moore Jamaican Aqua.  That white strip along the wall are a series of metallic bulletin boards from IKEA.  My goal for this week is to organize my small findings and beads in magnetic metal containers and use this for vertical storage.   Underneath the white boards, I plan to install a storage bar.  This can house beads, necklaces, buckets of tools, etc.

Wall storage repurposed from old CD/DVD shelves.  Mason jars, recycled glass jars for bead and finding storage and lots of natural light.   Vinyl signage with important message.  xD

It was a happy accident to have these shelves ready to go for bead storage.  They housed hundreds of CDs that we never use any more after digitally storing our music. I love these shallow shelves; they prevent stuff getting shoved in the back and hidden from sight.   This is another pic from May 2012.  Those jars are packed with goodies now.

So let's get real.  Those pristine pics above were when the workspace was new.  This is what it looks like when I'm working on something or lately, if I want to work on something, but don't have the time.

The work table, which is made up of two of these and a custom-built laminated top w/tray base made by my fabulous father-in-law and it's been fantastic.  The cubbies below have both open and basket storage.   And no, the table doesn't stay constantly cluttered.  I have to declutter after each project or I would go mental.

I usually have an episode of The Thick of It playing on the laptop as I'm designing.  Some people like Mozart, these days for some reason it's calming for Malcolm Tucker to be swearing a blue streak in the background as I'm working.  I'm o…

Closed storage of all the stuff I don't want to see.  :)

Sooooo... the next blog post will be the results of my reorganization.   I gave myself a deadline of Sunday noon.   I'll try to take some detailed pics, too.  I love seeing photo/video tours of other people's work spaces to get ideas, so it's payback time.   See you then!
